Gourmet :: Eat, Sleep, Hack... (EN)

Since I’m unemployed, I mostly stick to budget-friendly food. I can’t afford expensive meals—it would make dinner too expensive, so that’s out of the question. That’s why I’d like to introduce and share mainly good-value lunch options.

Overall Up Date and Time of Visit Order Price 2026-09-19 19:00 Regular + Nori + Rice (Medium) 950 + 150 + 200 = 1,300 yen Thoughts Since it just opened recently, this was my first visit. I ordered the “Noodles, Firm.” It was a little salty. The spinach had a nice, crisp texture, which was good. The flavor is mild, so this might be a good option when you’re in the Kannai Station area. I give it high marks for accepting all forms of cashless payment. It took 45 minutes from when I arrived at the restaurant until I was seated, which is acceptable considering it was Saturday dinner time. I’d definitely visit again.

Overall Up Date and Time of Visit Order Price 2026-09-22 12:30 Ginger Pork Set Meal (Lunch) 980 yen Thoughts This is my first time at a restaurant on “Stray Cat Street.” I plan to explore more places here going forward. As an old-timer, my appetite tends to shrink. I’m stuffed here too, but I think the portion size is just right for the average person. The meat is a combination of loin and belly, which is nice because it offers a variety of textures. It’s coated in a fairly sweet-and-salty sauce that goes really well with rice. I didn’t really taste much ginger, though. Since it’s a one-person operation, it looks a bit hectic, but if you go during off-peak hours, I think you’ll get served just fine. This will definitely be one of my go-to spots when I’m exploring the neighborhood.

Overall Enlarge Date and Time of Visit Order Price 2026-09-30 11:30 Chicken Curry 1,680 yen Thoughts
A soup curry restaurant. Apparently, it’s a branch of a famous Sapporo chain. It’s just plain delicious—if you’re looking to eat soup curry, this place or the one in Nogezaka are the ones to go to. I tried going there once before but gave up because it was so crowded. At that time, there were a lot of tourists. This time, I got in without any trouble. Since it was my first visit and I wasn’t quite sure how things worked, I just ordered the chicken curry with regular spice level. If I had one criticism, it’s that the furnishings are shoddy. The faux leather sofa is torn, and it looks like it would hurt if your skin touched it. All things considered, if they’re going for an Asian vibe, I think they’ve gone a bit overboard. I came alone this time, but whether I’ll return depends on who I’m with next time.

Overall Enlarge Date and Time of Visit Order Price 2026-10-01 15:15 Cake Set 1,100 yen Thoughts
I ordered the cake set: the Mini Boston—this place’s signature item—for the cake, and coffee for the drink. The Mini Boston has a comforting, delicious flavor. After walking a bit, the lightly sweetened cream soothes my tired body; I’m almost home. The coffee doesn’t quite measure up to the Mini Boston—it falls short by quite a bit… It seems this place is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It’s a shame that the only cashless payment option is PayPay.PayPay has become practically useless after the recent changes. The atmosphere of a long-established shop and the bright interior make it a comfortable place to be. However, perhaps due to the layout of the shop, sound tends to echo easily, so whether you can enjoy a quiet visit will likely depend on the other customers present. Since this visit was largely a treat for my tired body, whether I return will depend on who I’m with…

Overall Enlarge Store Date and Time of Visit Order Price 2026-10-03 11:45 Crab Fried Rice 1,200 yen Thoughts
There was a sign at the entrance that said something like Loved for 46 Years.” It’s been 30 years since I**,** an old-timer, moved to Yokohama. This restaurant is located along the Isezaki Mall, and even though I live nearby, this is my first time visiting. I heard they serve oyster fried rice starting in November, so I came here to set a benchmark in anticipation of that. In a way, you could call that a somewhat impure motive. The interior had a nice, cozy vibe. If you grab a seat by the window, you’d probably be able to see people coming and going along Isezaki Mall. Most of the customers seemed to be regulars. Since they don’t offer set meals, ordering was a bit of a challenge. The only self-contained options are noodle dishes or rice dishes. With the oyster fried rice on my mind, I decided to order the crab fried rice instead—just one character different.

Overall Enlarge Store Menu Beer Steak Date and Time of Visit Order Price 2026-10-04 12:15 Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich + Beer 2,480 yen Thoughts
The Phillies put up a good fight in the MLB Wild Card game (though they were unfortunately eliminated), and Philadelphia serves as the setting for Season 4 of the Amazon Prime Video series Reacher. When you think of Philadelphia, you can’t help but think of the famous Philly cheesesteak sandwich (hereinafter referred to as “cheesesteak”), which has become a staple of stadium cuisine at the Phillies’ home stadium. In fact, in Reacher Season 4, the protagonist is seen tucking into one at the beginning and end of the series, and it appears frequently throughout the show as well. Because of this, my old-timer’s mind has been completely taken over by thoughts of it. I can’t help but wonder if there’s a place in Yokohama that serves this…

Overall Enlarge Store Date and Time of Visit Order Price 2026-10-15 11:30 Ginger Pork Set Meal 990 yen Introduction
It was a store that had always caught my eye whenever I went to the fishing tackle shop next door to buy blue sandworms for goby fishing. Unfortunately, the fishing tackle shop next door had gone out of business and the lot was now vacant; when I arrived, an excavator was roaring away… Glancing at it out of the corner of my eye, I checked the store’s name. It read Ya Hyaku Hachi.” There’s a term called jukijikun.”It’s that concept where you write tomorrow” but read it as “ashita.” The word “yaoya” (greengrocer) is probably one of the first jukujikun you learn. By changing the stroke order of those characters, you get Ya Hyaku Hachi.” I wondered if hyaku” (hundred) was read as “otte” as I opened the shop door.

So I’m heading to Joshuya on Nihon-dori, but I’m starting to get a little hungry.I decided to check out the café in the Yokohama Second Government Complex that I’d seen on YouTube before. Since I ended up arriving at Joshuya first, I considered buying the bait first… but I figured I wouldn’t really be able to relax at the café with the blue sandworms in tow, so I decided to stop by the café first.

With locations scattered throughout Kawasaki and Yokohama, the Akebono-cho and Yoshino-cho branches are the closest to my place, so I usually go to the Yoshino-cho branch. Burg offers a special menu called This Week’s Recommendation” (hereinafter referred to as “Recommendation”), which changes weekly and lets you enjoy flavors not found on the regular menu.An old-timer looks forward to these “Recommendations” and orders them unless there’s a very good reason not to. The fact that miso soup comes as a standard side is a subtle plus.

A “ramen drive” refers to the ramen-hunting excursions of Bosch, an old-timer and my former coworker. We usually visit well-regarded ramen shops in the Kanto area once every two or three months. On the way, we catch up on what’s been going on—or maybe it’s just my former car-dealer nature—but for an old-timer like me, there’s nothing more satisfying than watching the cars go by and chatting about this and that.

Overall Enlarge Store Date and Time of Visit Order Price Cashless 2026-10-19 11:00 Tonteki 990 yen Generally OK I pass by Isezaki Mall often, so I’d been curious about this place.I skipped breakfast today, so I wanted to make up for it with a hearty meal—I was craving something meaty, which is why I chose this place. True to its name, it seems you can also order curry here. But for the reason mentioned earlier, I went with meat today. I ordered the reasonably priced tonteki. Despite the price, I was pleased that it was served on a sizzling hot iron plate. The seasoning was teriyaki-style. The rich flavor goes great with white rice. What’s worth noting here is that the rice was delicious. With inexpensive set meals, the rice is often neglected, but I was happy to see that wasn’t the case here. The fact that they accept cashless payments is a subtle plus. If I had to mention just one suggestion, it would be that it would have been even better if they included soup or miso soup.
