irMagician

Overview

irMagician This is a USB-connected infrared remote control adapter (hereinafter referred to as the “IR adapter”) developed in 2014. The biggest difference from traditional IR adapters is that it stores the waveform directly, rather than using codes typical of NEC-type or Sony-type adapters. As a result, it became possible to program the remote control signals for certain air conditioners, which had been difficult with older models. Due to this success, competing products from other manufacturers—starting with the irMagician and later models—have increasingly adopted this method.

irMagician Description
irMagician Riding the wave of the IoT boom, it managed to sell 2,500 units—an impressive figure, especially for a DIY hardware project. It’s been quite a few years since its release, and while it’s already been discontinued, I still find it very useful at home, paired with a homemade program that runs on the Raspberry Pi at NAS. Here, I’ll explain how to make the most of it.

Deliverables

  • YDBC-30

    YDBC-30 Description
The YDBC-30 is a terrestrial digital TV tuner; I bought it over 15 years ago. Since it outputs a signal at HDMI, you can connect it directly to LCD or to the capture unit at HDMI. Especially when using a capture unit, since it doesn’t take up the entire screen, it’s convenient for making effective use of 4K-LCD. The YDBC-30—named after the device itself—serves as a web app that functions as a remote control for it. Since it runs in a web browser, you can even turn your smartphone into a remote control, as shown in the photo. I hope this serves as a reference when using other devices that support remote control.
  • Live!Prog
Live! Prog is a hack that embeds the basic control buttons for the YDBC-30 into an existing web TV program guide. It was developed through the process of learning web development and is intended for intermediate to advanced users.

  • irm3
irm3 is a script (python) that supports the basic commands of irMagician. Use it to learn and play back infrared remote control signals, as well as export and import them to and from JSON.

  • irMagicianFW_Ref
irMagicianFW_Ref is a reference implementation of the firmware for the irMagician. You may encounter difficulties with the actual build due to issues with the toolchain and code consistency. Intended for intermediate to advanced users.
